It’s the worst flu season in years—if you aren’t able to avoid it, try a virtual visit

When you or any of your family members get the flu, the best thing to do is stay home. But, if you feel you need to see a doctor, and you’re enrolled in HealthSelectSM of Texas or Consumer Directed HealthSelectSM, you can skip a visit to the clinic and connect with a licensed doctor—any time via your smartphone or computer.
If you decide to meet with a doctor virtually, you can choose between Doctor on Demand or MDLIVE®. Both services are available 24-hours a day, 7 days per week, weekends and holidays.
Three ways to fight the flu
The best strategy for the flu is to not get it in the first place. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that there are three actions you and your family members can take to keep from getting sick during this tough flu season. Read more.
Here’s what you can expect from your visit:
- You will consult with a board-certified doctor from a computer or mobile device using live audio and video technology.
- The doctor will diagnose your symptoms, which usually takes about 5-15 minutes.
- If you need a medication, the doctor will send the prescription to your pharmacy of choice.
If you are a member of HealthSelect of Texas (including out-of-state participants), a virtual visit is free to you—there is no copay. Consumer Directed HealthSelect members, a virtual visit usually will cost $50 or less before you meet your annual in-network deductible and $10 or less after you meet it.
None of the HMOs in the GBP offer virtual visits, but all have nurse hotlines available. If you are enrolled in an HMO, check your plan’s website for details.
