New Medicare card
March 7, 2018
If you are on Medicare, look for your new Medicare card over the next several months. Starting April 2018 through April 2019, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will mail replacement Medicare cards to all Medicare beneficiaries.
To help prevent fraud and reduce medical identity theft, your Social Security number (SSN) will not be shown on the card. Instead, the card will have a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI), a number not related to your SSN. When you get your new card, you should safely dispose of your old Medicare card by cutting it up or shredding it. You can start using your new card as soon as you get it.
: Your Medicare benefits won’t change because of the MBI.
To help prepare it’s important to make sure your mailing address is up-to-date with CMS. Contact Social Security
at (800) 772-1213 (TTY: (800) 325-0778) to update your address.
If you are already enrolled in HealthSelectSM
Medicare Advantage, HealthSelect Medicare Rx, or
Kelseycare Advantage you do not need to call ERS
to give us your new Medicare information.
If you are not currently enrolled in one of these plans your enrollment could be delayed until you contact ERS
to provide your Medicare details, including your MBI and Parts A and B effective dates.
Visit the CMS website
