Marriage


Before the "big day" arrives, there are some factors to consider making the transition from your single life to married life smoother. Marriage is a qualifying life event (QLE) in terms of your benefits. A declaration of informal marriage (common-law) or a government-issued marriage license is accepted as supporting documentation.

You can change your elections for benefits within 31 days of the event. 

For you, the participant:

  • Enroll or change your health, dental and life insurance (active employee) options for yourself.
  • Increase your TexFlex health care and/or dependent care account(s) to include expenses for your dependents (active employee).**
  • File your name change and update our records (if applicable).
  • Update contact information with your new address (if applicable).
  • Change your tax deductions (if applicable).
  • Change your retirement planning needs or beneficiary designations. (Can be done at any time.)

For your spouse:

  • Enroll or change health, dental and dependent life insurance (active employee) options for your spouse.
  • Elect to participate in or change contributes to your TexFlex health care account (active employee).

For your eligible unmarried children under age 26:

  • Enroll or change health, dental and dependent life insurance (active employee) options.
  • Elect to participate in or change contributes to your TexFlex health care and/or dependent care accounts (active employee).**

For your eligible married children under age 26:

  • Enroll or change health options.
  • Elect to participate in or change contributes to your TexFlex Health and/or Dependent Care Accounts (active employee).**

**Children are eligible for the TexFlex dependent care account up to age 13.
