HealthSelect participants: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas to manage mental health benefits star

HealthSelect participants: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas to manage mental health benefits starting September 1

June 3, 2020

Good mental health plays a big role in your overall health. Your HealthSelectSM plan offers mental health benefits to help you stay focused and healthy.

(If you are enrolled in the HealthSelectSM Out-of-State or HealthSelectSM Secondary plans, BCBSTX is currently your mental health benefits administrator. If you are enrolled in HealthSelect Medicare Advantage, Humana is your insurer for medical and mental health benefits.)

To better serve you, BCBSTX will begin managing mental health benefits for HealthSelect of Texas® and Consumer Directed HealthSelectSM on September 1, 2020.

Please note: Mental health coverage in the HealthSelect plans will not change because of this transition. In-network and out-of-network copays, coinsurance and deductibles remain the same.

How will this affect me?

This change will make it easier for you to get support for any mental health benefits-related questions, because you’ll have just one number to call for medical and mental health questions. You will be able to view all of your medical and mental health claims on one website by signing in to Blue Access for Members

While most providers who are in Magellan's network will also be in the HealthSelect network, some will not. BCBSTX will continue to add mental health providers to the HealthSelect network over the coming months, so check Provider Finder or call a BCBSTX Personal Health Assistant for the most up-to-date information on network status. You will also have access to additional mental health providers who are not in the Magellan network. If you are seeing a mental health care provider who has not contracted to be in the HealthSelect network by September 1, you can recommend that they be added to the network by filling out this provider nomination form.

If your provider is not joining the HealthSelect network, and you need help finding a new in-network provider, a BCBSTX Personal Health Assistant can help. Of course, if you would still prefer to see your current mental health provider, even if he or she is not in-network, you may do so in the HealthSelect plans—just remember you pay more for services you get from out-of-network providers.

If you are currently getting care from a mental health professional, you can do the following things:

  • Watch for mail from HealthSelect with information on actions you should take to avoid disruption of mental health care services.
  • Read these frequently asked questions.
  • Visit the Mental Health page on the HealthSelect website for updates.
  • Use Provider Finder or call a BCBSTX Personal Health Assistant to check if a mental health provider will remain in the network as of September 1, 2020.
  • In August, join a webinar with information about the transition from Megellan to BCBSTX. Check ERS’ online events calendar in late July for more information.

Use your HealthSelect mental health benefits

As a HealthSelect participant, you have benefits cover mental health and substance use concerns, including anxiety, stress, depression, grief, and drug and alcohol use.

Some services, such as inpatient treatment or intensive outpatient hospital treatment, need a prior authorization before the plan will cover them.

To search for in-network providers, visit the HealthSelect website, log in to Blue Access for Members and click “Find a Doctor/Hospital” to access Provider Finder.

You can also call a BCBSTX Personal Health Assistant toll-free at (800) 252-8039, Monday–Friday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday, 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. CT for help finding a provider. A BCBSTX Personal Health Assistant can help you find in-network providers or assist you with setting up a mental health Virtual Visit.

A mental health virtual visit can put you on a path to feeling better. Check out Sam’s journey toward improved mental health.

As noted above, in August, the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) and BCBSTX will offer webinars with more information about the mental health benefits administrator change. For more information, please check the ERS events calendar in late July.
