Here’s how it works: Rosaline’s journey
Rosaline, a HealthSelectSM participant, had been experiencing terrible headaches for a few weeks. The pain was constant, and over-the-counter medications were not helping. She decided to call the 24/7 Nurseline to discuss her symptoms. The nurse suggested she make an appointment with her primary care provider (PCP).
After a thorough discussion of her symptoms and medical history, Rosaline’s PCP recommended a CT scan to rule out more serious causes for the headaches and submitted a request for prior authorization.
Rosaline remembered hearing about the HealthSelectShoppERS incentive program from her co-worker George, who was able to save money on an MRI for his back pain. She decided to log in to Provider Finder and search by procedure for in-network imaging centers that could perform her CT scan.
She found a lower-cost, in-network facility with high quality ratings and got an estimate of her out-of-pocket costs. Rosaline chose the lower-cost facility and became eligible to earn $150 in TexFlex health care flexible spending account (FSA) rewards.
Once Rosaline had her CT scan, her provider submitted the claim to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX). After BCBSTX processed the claim, Rosaline got the reward as a deposit in a TexFlex health care FSA. (Rosaline didn’t already have a health care FSA, so ERS set one up for her.) She can use the $150 toward future FSA-eligible medical expenses like deductibles, copays, prescriptions or dental care.
Luckily for Rosaline, her CT scan ruled out any serious causes for her headaches. Her doctor prescribed migraine medication, which helped. Rosaline was relieved to finally feel better and find a solution for her headaches without over-spending.
