Perks and Benefits

Employee Perks and Benefits

ERS offers an array of benefits to employees.  These include health, dental and life insurance, and a variety of leaves such as:

  • annual,
  • sick,
  • holiday,
  • bereavement and
  • jury duty.

Additional benefits include flexible work schedules, wellness incentives and tuition reimbursement.

Most employees of Texas agencies become members of the ERS retirement plan as soon as they start working. The state retirement plan is a defined benefit plan. That means, as an employee when you choose to retire after reaching eligibility, you will get a monthly payment (or annuity) for the rest of your life— no matter how long you live.
Note: Employees of higher education institutions do not participate in the ERS retirement program. Visit the Higher Education Employees page for more information.

Tuition Reimbursement

Upon the approval of the Executive Director, ERS may reimburse an employee for the cost of tuition, fees and books incurred for classes that are job related and are taken at an accredited college or university as defined by Education Code, Chapter 61.003 for the completion of a degree program.

Reimbursement can only be given after the employee has successfully completed the course with a passing grade of at least a ‘C’ or the equivalent. Reimbursement is subject to the availability of funds and currently is limited to $2,500 per semester with a maximum annual reimbursement of $7,500.
